1. How long have Solatubes been around?

The roots of Solatube International Inc., originator of the tubular skylight, had humble beginnings dating back to 1989 and an Australian inventor. At a time when poorly designed – and often leak prone – traditional skylights had become the scorn of home and business owners, the inventor had a revolutionary idea: a compact, leak proof and effective alternative.

In 1986, a patent was sought and four years later, Solatube Limited was established. The first Solatube® was sold in 1991 and sales that first year made the "light catcher" the best selling skylight in Australia.

  2. Why are Solatubes so much brighter than other skylights?

Raybender™ Technology is a patented feature in Solatube's UV and impact resistant dome. The Raybender lens redirects low angle light down the tube for enhanced performance during the morning and afternoon, and in the winter when the sun is low in the horizon.

Spectralight 2000™ tubing is the most advanced available in the world and is exclusively Solatube's. Spectralight 2000 tubing provides up to 95% total reflectance and 92% specular reflectance. It is the most reflective material on the world market today and is used on all tube sizes and diameters. It provides maximum light transfer.

  3. What happens on a cloudy day?

The patented internal reflective systems for the 10,14, and 16 inch Solatubes, along with the highly reflective tubing, transfers direct and ambient light down into your room with minimal light loss.  Customers are continually amazed at how much light Solatube produces on a cloudy day.

  4. Is there a warranty?

All parts are covered by a 10 year warranty. The Duradome10 is made from a high quality acrylic resin that is specifically formulated for increased impact, chemical, weather resistance and high clarity. The tubing is made from puncture proof aluminum sheet with a UV protective covering, which prevents deterioration over time. Other assemblies are injection molded to ensure strength and quality. There is a two year installation warranty if the installation is arranged through Natural Solutions.

 5. What makes Solatube so maintenance free?

All assemblies (dome, diffuser, flashing) have seals and all joints are sealed to stop bugs and dirt infiltration. Solatube is designed to be a sealed unit.

Unlike traditional skylights, there is no messy drywall shaft that requires cleaning and repainting.

The design and shape of the dome and flashing eliminates build-up of outside debris, making the Solatube maintenance free.

 6. Do Solatubes leak?

Solatube is designed for leak free operation when properly installed. The metal, injection molded polypropylene, or fiberglass roof flashings are one piece and seamless to eliminate leakage.

 7. What if there is no attic space? Or if I have a cathedral ceiling?

Our product has been designed for installation even where there is no access to the attic, and with numerous flashings and options, most all applications can be addressed.

 8. Why do I need natural light in my home?

Studies have long proven sunlight adds to our good mental health. With sunlight in our environments we feel more energized, productive and happy. Our house plants thrive from it and all our surroundings shine in their true colors.
